If you’re cropping and running livestock, you have two options when it comes to utilising your grain:
- Sell it to the market
- Feed it to your own animals
When your feed conversion is low & your feed efficiency is high, that grain becomes more valuable in your own yards than it is at the silo.
With lamb prices at record highs, grain fed to livestock under the right conditions can deliver a much greater return than selling it off farm.

Here’s a simple example:
If a finished feed ration (Barley 75%, lupins 20%, ProAgni ProTect 5%) is $460 per tonne, and you can convert one tonne into 250 kg of live weight using a 4:1 feed conversion ratio, and lambs are selling for $4.60 per kg, that same tonne could
return $1150 in saleable weight. Compare that to $460 sold off the farm.
The difference is feed efficiency. The better your conversion, the more valuable your grain becomes.
How to calculate the value of your grain based on a 4:1 Feed conversion (kg eaten: kg liveweight)
$4.60 (liveweight value per kg) divided by:
$1.84 (46c = 1kg full feed ration x 4)

= 2.5 x multiplied value of grain
ProAgni helps producers lift feed efficiency and reduce waste, turning homegrown grain into higher margins.
